In The Sauna is Where I Play, 2025

In The Sauna is Where I Play, Lars Palsgraaf explores how queer identity is formed in early childhood and how unresolved fragments of it continue to resonate into adulthood. He uses children's drawings not just as a source of research, but as a grammar: emotional scale, symbolic order, and disrupted space.

This work unfolds in a transitional zone between self-discovery and neglect, between systems of care and systems of control. Palsgraaf is interested in how identity does not develop linearly, but in spirals—shaped by memory, trauma, subcultural codes, and desire.

Through a childlike visual language, corrupted materials, and symbolic dissonance, he attempts to remap the invisible routes of the gay experience, where dependency can mirror intimacy, and survival becomes kinship.

The installation does not seek resolution. Instead, Palsgraaf creates space for ambiguity: for reflection without conclusion, a suspended terrain in which understanding can emerge—and in which what society often overlooks becomes visible.
